Seriously, what the fuck is up with magazines like Cosmopolitan? Every time I walk past a stall with their magazines, I will see at least 2 of the front page bits talking about sex this or sex that. I thought the magazine was supposed to be a little less… stereotypical? Or is it just that they think only straight polygamous women read that shit?

Than would have used in other situations. Then is used (generally) as an ‘after the progress of time’ adverb. Than is used to introduce a second element in comparison.
So no, ‘than’ is not the proper word to be used in this situation. Then is the correct word to use and that person did. Your grammar Nazi failed.
